As i mentioned earlier, I managed to get a few interviews done. They will be posted later on tonight, in the meantime I have some DIY (I've been decorating my new computer room. I smell like Vinyl Matt[ yes that is paint] :) and phone calls to make. And stuff with the office ( hey, Mike found it humours :) On with the replies

WW being sued not true...
I didn't even notice it before now or on tumsun :( Unless someone removed it....

Wrestling
It's obviously fake, but the funny thing about it is the moves and other stuff. Also it does actually have a decent story line. The fans range from total lunactics to little babies. Yeah it's true I've seen babies in the crowds.

Ouch...
If you do it right, and everything goes right, rugby isn't that painful. On the rare occosions this happens.....It's a pretty cool game. I play second row. You play any position?

heh
I've been attacked by WinNuke before. Thanks to my trusty LockDown2000 it ws kept out :) There was this fuss last time it happened. No doubt there will be some lamer going on about why warez 0wns like there was in Tumsuns forum last time.

News...
Your not telling me that's real are you? I doubt ted would make a typo especially on the first word. Also it sounds nothing like him. I also doubt he would repeat himself. I've also never heard that being used anywhere else than RA. Just my view

SHP owns
I just had a little chat to Steve and i guessed it was something to do with the actually gfx. Here's what he said:
A SHP file is the file format Tiberian Sun uses for general Animations. These could be structures, (such as when they are built, or when they get damaged, there are generall about 2-3 damaged states per structure). They are also used for things like the Radar start up animation and unit animation.
The reason we want an editor is that with this editor we can create new graphics for the game and basically "re skin" TS.
Actually sounds a rather nifty idea :-)

As promised I will have the two interviews up and also the Lamer of the week award, which I am still deliberating over. Until next time.....

Therm left a message on ICQ telling me that the same guy whole made RA Mixer is working on an SHP file viewer as part of a Childs Play Software contest. Because I'm not even going to bother to pretend that I understand what viewing SHP files will do for us, I'll provide you this link to make it look like I did some form of research for this update.

Coming from the same category as pigs flying, I'm pleased to annnounce that [-lp-] have some real news to post. Of course no effort was actually done by any member of the [-lp-] crew to obtain the news as this would be a strict violation of tradition, however Crazy_ did email me a responce from VT when he asked VT about that Britney Spears hell march thingy;
THanks for writing, this was the first I had heard of it. Actually, I believe that the soundclip used by Britney Spears was the same used by us. There are music libraries with tens of thousands of sound clips which companies can purchase for use, and it seems her music guy just happened to pick the same one. That is why you will sometimes here a sound effect used in a game on TV or in TV commercials.

"I mentioned over at the office" - at least I found that amusing.

If you get a virus from using something related to warez then as far as I'm concerned you've got what you deserve... but winnuke? I don't like your chances of someone putting that in there...

As mark did it a day or two ago, I thought why not post mine? Here it is for all to see, it is my main pc however... things like Natper and mirc (along with a few more mp3's) are on my other machine

While I'm talking about desktops, can anyone suggest a good, or a good place to get wallpapers... I'm not after something complcated and it doesnt have to be related to gaming at all, it just has to be interesting. For a long time now I havn't had a wallpaper, simply disabling my entire desktop, and getting it to display the version number of windows that I'm currently running (both registry settings I believe). Any suggestions would of course be appreciated.

Could someone please inform me what's entertaining about watching a few overwieght guys in way too revealing clothes pretend to hit and kick each other while a group of redneck fans drink beer and cheer? Watching those butch chicks that they've got now too only makes things worse...

No shit? [/sarcasm]

Once appon a time I used to think that webmasters were intelligent people... I saw some sites taking it seriosly (as apposed to places like CCNNZ and PCNC who at least posted their doubts about the thing)

For starters, it was hardly news anyway, that rumor has been around for months...

You know if I could be bothered to get of my lazy ass then I might sign myself up for seti@home :-)
Seems those lamers known as warez-freaks have 'cracked' Firestorm. Where the hell they got the code form beats me. As I mentioned over at the office the warez game is split up into little files each with it's own little 'surprizes'. Including old favs such as WinNuke, Netbus and the lethal SubSeven. By the time your virus scanner has detected these things your already dead.

This weeks Song of the Week is only taken up to friday night as after that not only did my gfx get KO'd, my sound is messed up. Sndvol32 (the thing that makes the speaker like thing appear in your SysTray) doesn't want to respond. But never fear I doubt I would of been swayed. The song of the week this time goes to *drum roll* Welcome to the Machine by rock legends Pink Floyd. These guys were around of the time of Led Zepplin and Def Leppard if you did't already know :)

And finally I'm sure Toad would join me in saying good bye to undoubtably one of the best wrestlers in the WWF, ever, Mick Foley. Aka Cactus Jack, Mankind and Dude Love. Triple-H did a over-the-back suplex on Cactus through the cell and then pedigreed him to end his career. Also in No Way Out we saw Chris 'Y2J' Jericho lose the Intercontinental Belt to Kurt Angle and the New Age Outlaws [see: the guys who use the saying at the being of my last post] lost the Tag Team Titles to the Dudles. Big Show vs The Peoples Champion The Rock saw Shane McMahone clock the Rock with a steel chair as he was about to do the peoples elbow on a The Big Show. I reckon this is the return of the mightiest power ever in the WWF, the Corperate Ministery. I reckon they used this chance to get the Big Show on their side. They used to have wrestlers like The Undertaker, Big Boss Man and Vishnu. Time will tell. But I can feel one mighty stir up :)

Ahhh... okay, this is better, I finished that last unit in a bit over 12 hours, woohoo! I'm almost half-way done with a 3rd (47.7) and only 4.5 hours... heh, not sure why that first one took so long. So now I've got 2 done, one taking 31 hours and another about 12 hours. Weird. =)

Oh, and I guess it does take a while for the stats to go on the group page, my first unit is showing on there now... Also, what was that idea you mentioned on the forum, Mike?

Dang! That freakin' unit took me almost 31 hours! I was just looking around some sites and noticed that the code for it is optimized for Intel CPU's. =( That said, it still shouldn't have taken my PC THAT long... I mean, it's an Athlon 600 with 128MB of RAM for crying out loud! Ah well, I'm working on another unit now. How long does it take for my unit to show up on the group stat page? I can see it on my personal stat page, but not on the group one... maybe I did something wrong?

Actually... this unit is doing a lot better... 23+ done and "only" almost 4.5 hours... that would still take around 18-20 hours at the current pace... ah well, maybe I need to shut down some of the other proggies running. =)

Weekly Round-up | - 02.28.2000
archived news - up
"Oh you mean you didn't know? Your ass better call some body!!!"

This weeks round up brought to you slightly later than usual due the fact I was watching Escape from New York. Just aired it again here so I thought I'd watch it. Not a bad film and pretty damn good for 1981.

In other news I got my screen res working again :) Thanks mainly to the efforts and help of Steve Childs I'm now able to play, amoungst other things, UT, Grim Fandango and Q3. In other news Friday 1800 PST saw the first public chat westwood have held since the release of TS. If you want a log you can grab a-hold of tumsuns here. Also Rift have released there monthly neswletter which is packed full of the good quality articles written by Shadow

We are now only 45 minutes away from No Way Out, the latest WWF pay-per-view event. Actually because it's going to be 1am here, it's free :) For the full low-down check out WWF.com. Also I watched the grammies earlier tonight and caught Britneys performance of Baby One More Time. The only reason it has the drill sergeant in is because there are these dumb-ass robots with sticks up there asses to make them move. That said she looked pretty damn hot in that red number ;)

Not terribly much went on in the world this week. If you want my unedited version of the chat ( the private messages that were wizzing about ) then let me know.

-So it's good night from me

Man, I probably acted like the biggest newbie in the entire chat. I was using my linux box for wol, and as such I'm not so used to chatting non-stop on it's keyboard. The "wow thanks" bit i said publically was actually intended to be private, and I even sent half a private msg to vt in all caps after hitting the caps lock key... oops.

Anyway, I figured it was about time I posted about the rest of the firestorm chat, after the little bit of controversy I caused in it. For those that missed the historic event, I asked if WW had read the rant I posted a few days ago... just because things were getting pretty boring and I decided to spice things up a little. If you missed reading the log, here's what was said;

warmaker0 : thanks ted
warmaker0 : hey rade
[Ted] : Preordering is the key.
warmaker0 : i just have a couple of questions
Rade-WS : Go for it.
warmaker0 : first - i was wondering if you had read my rant on ww's treatment of their fans at http://www.warmaker.com/rants/fans.shtml . if so, any
warmaker0 : comments?
Rade-WS : Yes I did read that, you were commenting on the lack of Westwood people visiting the chat rooms, correct?
warmaker0 : have westwood percieved that there has been a problem in their past c&c expansion sets, and if so how did you plan to better them
warmaker0 : wow, thanks
warmaker0 : that was part of it, yes....
Rade-WS : I'll answer your second question first before I get back to the first. With Firestorm, we wanted to give people more. We didn't want to do an expansion pack with just new units or missions.
Rade-WS : We had a compelling story that we wanted to tell, so we shot new video footage that tied in to the missions, as well as provided new options for multiplay.
Rade-WS : Now, to answer your first question, it has a lot to do with timing. I only work on one project at a time so there isn't anything I can tell you right now about what I'm working on.
Rade-WS : I will definitely hop on the message boards and do impromptu chats when the time is right.
Rade-WS : Regarding other projects here, the decision about chatting with people is personal preference. I love to talk to you guys to see what you want in a game and give you information about what we're working on.
Rade-WS : Some of the other guys here are a a bit on the shy side and tend to avoid interviews and chats whenever they can. A few of them flee whenever we have a team photo shoot.
[Ted] : I'll just add a small comment to your rant on the website...
[Ted] : Our efforts to give back to the community (in the way of contests, monthly prizes, etc.) are pretty extreme compared to others.
[Ted] : Yes, we give away a lot of money.
[Ted] : But, this is our way of showing appreciation. I think your main argument is that we should spend the money
[Ted] : on a few more people to hang out here and answer questions. I couldn't agree more (although we still want to give back
[Ted] : to the fansites, fans, etc. in the way of prizes and stuff)
[Ted] : I'm looking for dedicated "GameMasters" who will have more control over each of the communities. These people would have
[Ted] : direct access to WS and could relay news back to the fansites.
[Ted] : And, we would get better information back on what people are saying about our games.
[Ted] : I'll be posting some job apps up on the web for these positions soon, so please keep an eye out for them...
[Ted] : Okay. I'm done...
[Ted] : :)
Rade-WS : I'd be more than happy to chat with you at your convenience. You should be able to get my contact info from any of the web masters.
Rade-WS : I don't always make myself visible when I'm on-line since I get swamped whenever I do.
Of course, while the public chat was going, we were continuing the chat privatly, nothing that exciting was happening there tho. Perhaps more of interest are a few of the privates I got during the chat;
Toad: Your the only one I know who would ask them shit like that you da man

Therm: very nice war u are the best i have seen

KingZeus: damn, that takes some balls to confront them like that. haha

[Ted]: I'll just add a small comment to your rant on the website...
shadowtr: uh oh
KingZeus: oh @#!&*{!/^@ it comes......
shadowtr: lol
KingZeus: take cover
Th3Shadow: Mike...run.....;)

I plan on writing an article on some of the things Westwood seems to be doing after I posted the rant, such as the game master idea which sounds really good... I'm really pleased to see that Westwood perhaps do pay more attention to the community than I gave them credit for...

Newsletter Up at WWN | - 02.27.2000

As Shadow mentioned a day or two ago WWN have got their latest Newsletter out, featuring the high standard we've come to expect of the past efforts.

Of course the main reason to go though it is to check all the articles that Shadow has written and sadly wont get a mention from most sites. Infact, there's too much for me to read at the moment, and I've only had the time to thoroughly read though one article so far, the one on the Nox contest... if the others are anywhere near as good the newsletter page should keep you occupied for quite some time.

You've also got my article on the WW community in there and this issue has the Staff Focus on Sociopath.

If that won't convince you to check WWN then maybe news of Dude's latest totally irrelevant auctions of the week will, featuring some "killer" auctions... looks like his add last week didnt get his computer sold...

Status report | - 02.27.2000

Status report, 21st....*static*...2000. Current situation report follows. After buying Unreal Tournament on Friday 19th, I played the game and experienced pure gaming bliss. After, I turned off the computer to go out. When I came back several things happened. Firstly, the screen had reset itself to 640x480 and 16 colors (yes that's colors not bits). Secondly, I had no control whatsoever over the mouse. I tried rebooting and the mouse had no disappeared. After much strife i found that vmouse.VXD had been corrupted by something (UT?) and I needed to get a new mouse since reinstalling my old one hadn't worked. After getting a new mouse (no, nothing flashy) it worked but I was unable to change the display res!!

At this point I was very annoyed and very tired (having been up til past 4am on firday with the Rade chat and I got up at 8am for some weird reason) so left it til this morning. I identified the problem as rundll32.exe partly corrupted. So at the moment I'm running in 640x480 in 16 colors instead of 800x600 32bit.

What my desktop used to look like
What is looks like now(I deleted a few icons between when the two shots were taken)

Now i just need to find a win98 CD as I don't have one. When it was repaired a few months ago they installed 98, but left us with no CD. If anyone has any other ideas let me.....*static*

Plans turn sour | - 02.27.2000
archived news - up
Sorry for the lack of updates on my behalf over the weekend. By now I had planned to have written another site review, do a couple of interviews, and a review along with a few more content pages... however I didn't get any of it completed... my bad.

I had quite an... interesting weekend though, especially friday night. Normally, friday nights are spent doing things that go as planned, go to a party, go to the beach etc. and last Friday shaped up to be the same. We found out about this invite only party held in a suburb/town just past the ouskirts of sydney, 30 mins drive up the freeway from where i live. After being told we can go, I got a few friends together and we drove up. Once we got near the party, we noticed that there were people everywehre and when we entered the street there were two cop cars sitting out the front sending people away. This was pretty annoying as we had gone so far and i was meant to give another person a lift home who had got there earlier.... so much for invite only then.

Not wanting to cause trouble I simply drove past and we started to cruise around calling other people who were going as well and pretty soon one of my friends was driving right behind my car flashing his headlights and beeping his horn down the main street. I pull of, he pulls out some beers from the boot of his car and we sit around waiting for a few other friends to meet us.

After we had met up we started driving around again, deciding to head to a park where we had heard everyone was going. Eventually we got to the park where things got pretty unusual. From most estimates there were around 1000 people on the oval surrounded by at least 9 cars (the commodore's, wagons, 4wd's and even a wrx) and including the few that were driving around and the ones stationed outside the party we figured there would be more than 15 cop cars just for this one invite only party that wasnt meant to be that large at all.

We just sat with our cars for a while watching the cops round up this huge crowd of people (they had a couple of the dogs there too apparently) occasionally pulling someone out of the crowd for who knows what. We sat quitly amused for quite a while watching some pretty weird shit happen until a cop car pulls up beside a friend and told him that if the cars wernt gone in 5 minutes they would be impounded. That was enough encouragement to end one of the wierdest nights I've had in ages....

TS Falls | - 02.26.2000
archived news - up
Seeing as The Great One gave me a account on this script and I have no where else to post this piece of news I decided that the home of l33t p1mps was a good spot for news. Anyways over at Incite PC Gaming in their monthly top 20 selling games everyone's favorite game to insult Tiberian Sun fell from #5 to the lowest spot on the chart. TS plunge to the bottom was a rapid one as only two months ago it was on the top. Maybe it will make you feel better to know that Age of Empires 2 is going on the same pattern of dropping from #1 to #5. Only time will tell if it has the ability to suck quite like TS did on the charts. I personally don't think AOE 2 has what it takes to nose dive like TS.

It's not your basic Newsletter, as we have some cool graphics and coloring. But the sole reason that I am posting about it is that we are featuring Warmaker's rant. I really respect his determination to let his voice be heard on this matter and I too would like to share his views. I will also be including a semi-introduction to my rant that will be released after this Nox Contest. It goes into further detail about what he was talking about, but in regards to Nox. Britney and..hellmarch? | - 02.24.2000
archived news - up
It seems so. Jonx [Gamesvotes] just informed me about a post at the FoO concerning Britney using Hellmarch in her performance of Baby one more time....

But he noticed a familiar song during Britney Spear's Remixed version of ...Baby One More Time. I was taping the Grammys, so I rewound back to her performance, and as it seems, it sounds like Hellmarch was in that performance.
I'm d/l the file as we speak, but i'll put an update on how it goes. I've seen some of the remixs she does and they are usually just a jungle or trance remix, but hellmarch is an accoustic guitar so we'll see.

UPDATE: Well just after I posted this post, I finished downloading the file and played it. It was a little fuzzy, but was very clear was the voice of the drill master ( ten-hup that sort of stuff ) they hadn't used the guitar from the original and it is all round a crapper song than the original ;)

I was surprised by the amount I actually recieved from it, especially over ICQ. Props to the people who posted about it too, I was quite pleased to see that while not discussing my views (which is very understandable, I wouldnt have posted it when I was at Tumsun) they all ecouraged people to read it.

A couple of people sent in ideas on other ways that westwood could improve with their treatment of their fans. Therm (from Tumsun) made a very good comment about how Westwood don't even recognise childs play software, let alone support them with their editor. Shadow is planning to write one of his great rants on a similar subject (although I got the impression that it was going to be, at least originally more centered around nox) so he might be a good person to send your thoughts into, so that he could discuss them in his article.

If you've got any comments, feel free to continue on with YFJ's thread...

A New Generation | - 02.24.2000
archived news - up
After Erik Yeo, Lewis Peterson, and many other people left Westwood Studios, they decided to form their own company in Santa Monica...away from the blistering sun in Las Vegas. The company's name is 7-Studios, representing the 7 people who formed the company, and their focus is on video games, much like Westwood Studios is. "7 Studios is a new game developer dedicated to creating next-generation PC and console games," says Erik Yeo in a official statement in regards for co-creating it. You might be wondering why I'm talking about this...the reason being that Although Nox may dominate on the Computer at the moment, 7-Studios will focus on the PSX2 (PlayStation 2). They announced their first game that has been in development sometime and is entitled Legion. Here is a part of the Press Release that talks solely about what the game is:

Legion is one of the first strategy games to be created specifically for the next generation console. "Legion is an action strategy game, designed for the console from the ground up," said Erik Yeo. "I'm finally able to do things in Legion that I've always wanted to do with the genre. I'm extremely impressed with the capabilities of the Playstation 2."Legion brings to life the world of King Arthur - of Excalibur, Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table. "You're Arthur, hacking your way through your enemies with Excalibur, the most powerful sword in the land. You're fighting alongside Lancelot and the Knights of the Round Table," says Yeo. "Add Merlin as your mage, casting spells over Morgan Le Fay's armies, and you've got one hell of a war..."Legion uses a unique Knight Control System to allow the player to simultaneously control up to four Knights, which in turn control legions of the King's Armies in different disciplines - swordsmen, archers, cavalry, mages, and clerics. "We've invented a new interface to simplify control for a new platform, without taking away the strategic elements," said Yeo.
Another game based in the times of the Middle Ages :) Yipee! What is also interesting is that you are able to play a girl as well. Erik...you'll always be a part of this Community and we will miss you until your return. Good Luck with your game guys :)

Boy am I disapointed by the time it's taking TTR to get back, I mean if you only have a look at some other TT sites, you'll see some fine examples of all the TT news that we've missed, and are missing.

However the interview I've got below is so exciting that I just felt I had a duty to post it. After all, this is the most exciting news about TT (i'm being serios here) since TTR went down for it's re-design. Here's that groundbreaking news in all it's glory, I've bolded Aaron Cohen comments so that it's easier for you to understand the significance of his comments;

Tycho: Is there any information whatsoever about Tiberian Twillight?
Aaron: No.

Tycho:If you are continuing to make TibTwilight, can u tell me who the sides will be?
Aaron: No.

What can I say, after reading Aaron's replies I'm lost for words. Massive props to Tycho for posting such relevant news.

Thursday Nights Own | - 02.24.2000
archived news - up
Well, not really, but compared to any other week night they're pretty good. Of course the main reason for this to be the case is of course due to the fact that this time tomorrow it will be Friday night.

However Thursday night is also great as it's Dawson's Creek night the night where my ICQ sits in DND and you have to wait twenty minutes for a reply. Even though it just started over here season three is the best so far.

Regrettably, I've just spoken of TV, which has brought back nightmarish thoughts on the latest Love Rules (i think i've talked about it in the past) episode. We were once again treated with the story of three more blind dates, one featuring a surfie that figured he was funny, yet continually made a fool of himself, another where the chick got pissed, spending the night participating in activities such as singing love songs out of tune in front of an entire restaurant, and ending the night in a way that was described as "more than just a peck on the cheek" (that was the guy, the chick couldn't remember the night at all)Finally I got the sheer pleasure to watch the journy of some guy with the greatest example of what happens when you lack a fashion sence with a chick who had never been on a date before. What a brilliant insight into awkwardness that was.

I don't think there's any doubt about it, every week, Love Rules simply sets the standard of how bad commercial TV really can be...

Looks like I'll get cable access by the middle to late march. Of course, this was from the same company that said it would be out in september last year, however it is available now in some areas so things are looking up. Apparently, they're just setting up the nodes in my area and I'll be set. Of course, once I get cable, WM's leech server o' love will be up for people to... well... leech from a tasty collection of 2700 mp3's and 1 1/2 gig of hardcore video pr0n.

I know you can't wait...

That's the conclusion I had too, the Intel chips seem to cope with it better. I also run it all the time, except if I'm going to play an FPS game and i've always got ~15 (including winamp) in my sys tray, plus I'll normally have at least ten windows open... so I assume it is the chip.

BTW, did you use your RTSFan login for the counter? My account doesn't give me permission to edit the counterdata file....

I dunno... or maybe I've got too many things running at the same time. =) Probably that... anyways, I agree with you TheShadow, Macromedia stuff is kewl =)

I just downloaded a copy of Dreamweaver 3 to start work on project that has been code named 'ShadowNet' and I have to say it is very very good :) In a matter of minutes I had a multi-layered ( if just basic text ) graphics bar, a sidebar using some tables and my trademark 'acaba7' backgorund :)

Next step is creating some nice gfx for the top. Now if I can get hyper-snap to work properly, I can take a shot of my Matrix screen-saver....oh yes this will look pretty cool :) More info as I make it :)

Nox Contest Nearing End | - 02.23.2000
archived news - up
For all of you that don't know already, Westwood Studios has been holding a Nox Contest worth an estimated $5,000. In actuality, its $4,000 for the winner and the rest of the sites being distributed prizes worth $1,000 or so. Stuff that is included are T-shirts, Copies of Nox, and other interesting things.

Although I am one of those who are participating in the contest, my question is..."Why Nox?" I hope to answer that soon in a rant which will be displayed here and where I work in due time.

While I'm talking about my job, this Friday (I think) the Newsletter will be released at WWN:TR. Its very cool and original. Its a good example of what we're doing in terms of changing the face of the Community. Since I'm the Editor-in-Chief, I'll keep all of you updated if anyone is interested.

Now the public knows my first name :-) Next you'll be wanting my address ;)

After playing hell out of Q3 over Christmas ( it's amazing how well you do when you visualize annoying people in place of the bots ;) I finally got off the phone line to ring one of my friends who got UT instead and told me all about the single player including assualt mode and everything else. I've decided to get UT at the weekend so I should have a review done sometime next week ( which I have off btw :). See which is harder Nightmare [Q3] or Godlike[UT]. The hardest levels, because to play the hardest levels is to live....breifly ;)

I also noticed Britney has the hots for our Prince William. Should be interesting :) Shinano just said:

That is a pretty cool song. He released that a few weeks ago over here and he just released his next song called "Pause". And his next one is going ot be called Fast Forward. Sensing pattern? :)

On the subject of music my Choon of the week has most probably been Wilam Orbit - Barbers adagio for strings - Ferry Corsten Remix. Willam Orbit released an ablum a few weeks ago called ' Pieces in Modern Style ' which is Classical pieces remixed with a more trancey (is that a word? :) feel to them. This remix gives it even more of a trance sound. If you have played Homeworld, then this is the classical piece you here, except with lyrics it's called Angus Dei.

For those of you not gifted with Napster, I went and searched for it on Audiofind.com. I managed to find the exact one, get it here if you want it.

UBB vs Matt's? | - 02.22.2000
archived news - up
A couple of people have asked why I decided on using a Matt's stlye bulliten board rather than something along the lines of UBB. Pretty much, the current script is there because I didn't think that we needed something along the lines of UBB. I mean, UBB is great for large sites with different areas for different discussions, but for the usage the board is getting, who wants to wade thorough a few more pages to get to the same messages? If people want to switch over to something along the lines of UBB, then I don't have a problem with it at all. In fact, I couldn't think of a better place to post your opinion than here.

I'm actually really pleased with the way the forum is going, not only are we getting a number of posts a day, but they're mainly by cool/well known people in the community. Props to the likes of Shadow, Toad, YFJ and Shinano (and of course Tim, Oliver and Mark) for all posting.

No Key Commander of Win2k | - 02.22.2000
archived news - up
A good friend of mine, Drunk in Public, pointed out that Logitech don't plan on updating their Key commander sotware for Windows 2000. The key commander software, is what supports the logitech key (by pressing the logitech key, and then one of the f keys you can load the program... you can also change the volume etc. with it) and is something that I couldn't live without, because of it I hardly ever use the start menu, and dont use quick launch at all.

Currently, Logitech does not have a version of KeyCommander that is compatible with Windows 2000, due to architectural changes in the OS. Logitech does not plan to update KeyCommander software for Windows 2000.
It's pretty annoying how they won't update their drivers for their current users, I hope they change their minds.

More of a casual chat about what they like and general off-topic (which wasn't limited by chicks btw :). Hopefully Dario and Andreas will be on this week. I might catch Sonic at the weekend too. 'Nanobots' a reality? | - 02.21.2000
archived news - up
Well it seems so. The Association for the Advancement ofScience annual meeting held on sunday heard they could become a reality in a matter of years. Nanobots are tiney tiny robots that work at the atomic scale. So if you have an inoperable tumour, for example, they could put a few of these things in you and they could get rid of it.

Of course the arguement against these machines are if they got into the wrong hands then they could be used as an awesome weapon of destruction. They could program these bots to literally take apart weapons...or a like more macarbre, a human. Ick. The interesting article is over here.

Btw, for this seti@home, do you need to be connected to do a unit?

Hopefully, I'll create a separate page on [-lp-] one of these days going into more depth about this, but having said that there's 20 or so other things i also want to do with this site, and just havn't had the time.

I'm really not sure what the attraction to it is, I mean compared to the main groups an [-lp-] group is really insignificant. We can, however claim to be the best seti@home group in the ww community or something. Also, it will be cool to use the stat page for the group to see who can get through work units the quickest, who has spent the most time on it... once again, if you'ee interested in joining, this is where to do it.

Schoolies | - 02.21.2000
archived news - up
I booked it today, it's nine months away and all the good hotels and apartments have already been taken. For those who arn't aware (and I suppose thats most of you) schoolies could best be described as one huge graduation party at the end of year 12. Graduated students from all over australia go to a number of places to do... whatever they want for a week. It's mainly cellebrating the fact that you've got the HSC over, which is a series of tests that take place over about a month (you also get about a month off before it where practically everyone studies day after day for it) and make the PSAT's look like some little high school entrance test (seriosly...)

So anyway, me and about 12 friends are going up to surfers paridise (it's just south of brisbane, bit over 1000km up the coast from sydney) which is pretty much the place to be. It's going to be a mad week of drinking (being the primary activity) scoring (being the most important), hanging out at the beach, going to clubs (both normal, and the strip variety :) and heading of to the casino's. It'll be one great week, just 9 months and the HSC to go...

Weekly Round-up | - 02.20.2000
archived news - up
I was gonna call this the webmaster weekly, but decided that was a bit lame.

Since wm started, I feel I should continue the Lamer of the Week award. After a long and hard deliberation listening to my new trance choons, I decided to give Hybrid the lamer of the week award. For those of you who don't know who he is, he works at TFARenegade. With a marginally professional front page he managed to make it look like a lamers board with his total lack of grammar and spelling. I also unfortuntely go to school with this guy. He knows...Quick Basic! My god! And now he thinks he is King Sh1t. As soon has he got his job at TFA he was 'ohh how much will I get paid'. Enough of my whinning :)

It's with great honour I present Hybrid with Lamer of the Week award.

In other news NoX has been released and the venerable Shadow has played it for over 30hrs now i think :) The President of -lp-.inc has had his computer system replaced at his Sydney compound and the ph33red one known as Kanal is back from his break.

In important news, the Nasdaq and Dow Jones Industrial average had their worst days in 7 and 6 respective years, the EU are up in arms against the FOA, England are odds on favs for the Six Nations and All Saints took the UK Pop charts by storm by selling over 200,000 copies in one week to knock Oasis of the top spot.

And finally in the computing world this week, id release yet another patch for Q3, Dynamix have released a patch to fix the bug in their new patch for Starsiege, Windows 2000 has been relased and Windows Explorer 5.5 was also released. Did I miss point 2,3 and4? :)

F1 Row | - 02.20.2000

The EU have a disagreement with Bernie Eccleston and his chaps over at the FOA about broadcasting rights. They claimed the FOA has abused their powers over the circuits. This was the reply to the EU Commission. It roughly translates as: "Shut the f**k up or we will move out of Europe and then you can stop b1tching".

"The Commission also seems to be forgetting that F1 has become a global TV circus, in which it doesn't really matter except to the circuits and those immediately dependent on an event where it is held. There is no fundamental reason why all the grands prix could not be held outside the EU."
If the EU are going to b1tch about every damn thing on Gods Green Earth then it shouldn't be run by the people who run it now, those women on Opera/Jerry Springer/Ricki Lake should run it.

Cyrix Box Back | - 02.20.2000
archived news - up
After waiting for about a month or so, the place that I got my beast of a processor, otherwise known as a Cyrix 200, have returned a new one, as the original died while still under warranty. And don't just laugh at the Cyrix 200, but also feel free to make as much fun of the single speed cd-rom or the 1 meg video card that powers this gaming rig.

I normally don't do much with the computer though, apart from downloads and mirc (for about a year now I havn't been able to live with at least a dual monitor machine, to do different things on each.) I'm also thinking of putting redhat 6 on it, i used to have 5 until I swapped the hard disk's I used in that computer.

As a measure of speed, from thae way things are going it'll take the cyrix box just under 100 hours to get through a seti@home work unit, as apposed to the 14 hours it takes my main machine (or the 21 hours it takes eric's athlon.) Perhaps the scariest bit, is that I would have been really happy with a computer like it (minus the cd-rom perhaps) 2 years ago. How things change...

As I've probbly made clear in the past, I can't really say that I'm a fan of the contributions that Dude makes to WWN. Infact, imho his actions on the frontpage, really do bring what is a great site down. Once again, his lameness didn't fail to amaze me.

It seems that he's now taken to use WWN to advertise computers for presumably himself, or if not, a friend. The fist... not wait the second thought (the first was why hasn't someone removed his updating access) that he wasn't just simply making that update because this gaming system was a great deal, but that there was more to it. Of course, when you go to the Yahoo page that he links too, the sellers location is Killeen, TX - the same as his location in the WWN. Yeah, I'm sure you just "came accross a great yet - cheap gaming","While surfing the Yahoo Auctions."

And if that wasn't lame enough, this cheap gaming system of his isn't really that cheap after all. When you forget about the list of pirated software that he talks about (I'm sure he paid for Photoshop...) I figured that you could pretty much get that system for au$2000, let alone us$2000 like what he's asking...

It is a bit slow at some stages, but had some really good parts that were either funny or deep... seeing the chick was American Pie topless was just an added bonus.

I eventually got around to watching it. Like most people said, it's a bit more serios and contains more action than Buffy does, which is good I guess, it also had some poke-able chicks in it, with that point alone it's watchable in my book. However, with the serios acpect of the show, went the kind of witty humor that Buffy normally has. Still, it's a good show.

Also new to au television this season is a show called "Love Rules" which is simply a show that covers what happens after a few couple's meet for blind dates. It's definately one of those shows that's so bad, that it's worth watching. Plus, the presenter chick has some quite considerable assets (see: first paragraph, second sentance) If you're priveledges enough to be an Australian, then watching Ten (or Capitol) at 8 on tuesday is a must... just don't expect to learn any tips from it.

If my memory serves me correctly, Windows 2000 will be publically released tomorrow. I actually got my first real session with it today and even though it was good and everything, it wan't all that special, considering what ms are asking for it. Obviosly, the best thing with it is the stability, however the problem with win2k is that there isn't any real innovation in it, just cosmetic changes and a few small features that have been added. Furthermore, alot of hardware isn't supported on it yet and one game I tried wouldn't even run. I plan to wait a few months until it's supported a little better, and hopefully a little cheaper.

The first four points (and maybe the 5th, i'm not sure) are really just things that people had expected (windows derived os) or suspected (1 ghz cpu) in the past. That four gig hard drive, which is just going to help to blur the lines between pc and consolre will apparently be used to download patches, games and media. The console is expected out early next year.

As Oliver has already covered, after a few failed attempts by yours truely, Oliver decided to display his mad skills once again and set one up for us. I'm not quite sure which is more shocking... the fact that after almost 2 years I still have troubles setting up a basic cgi script, or the fact that we've already got a couple of posts. Feel free to post whatever you feel like... I'll make sure I fix the shout out section too...

Also, the now second best message board in the community is now back at BG:TS. It's relatively free of lamers, and unlike the other forums in the community it always seems to have at least one interesting discussion in it. The script isn't as pollished at it could be though, but i'm sure the rough edges will be smoothed out.

Well, finally got off my butt and setup the forum. =) I was going to let Warmaker post about it, but I got so bored I decided to do it myself. War can put it on the sidebar. ;) Enjoy!

Also, War... you might want to change the Shout Out section where it mentions GXNetwork. =) And the slow down a few days ago was caused by a couple of major German pipes going to the USA and other countries being damaged or something. Internet congestion from all those lame DoS attacks affected a lot of stuff too.

There's a ton of Nox reviews springing up everywhere, for example one written by Shadow at WWN. It stood out from the rest of the pack, as he not only provides a good run down of the demo (albeit a little biased, 97 percent?) but also a paragraph where he tells you about what clothes he likes to wear... bonus!

On a Nox related topic Chili111 is looking for someone to help him with Nox Central. I'm sure he would appreciate a hand.

Netscape 6 | - 02.14.2000

Some of you may have noticed that AOL/Netscape have announced that the first netscape browser produced after AOL took them over will be numbered version 6. What happened to number 5? Well no-one is quite sure, imho it has something to do with AOL wanting Netscape to suit their own customers, who can't count to ten either...

Browsers have got about as advanced as they currently can with current technology, hence the lack of innovation seen since the version 4 browsers. Apparently the greatest new thing in Netscape 6 is the intergration of AIM, something thats sure to deter, rather than encourage people to upgrade...

From the it's too good to be true department comes the news that in the next season of Buffy, Willow, well... jumps the fence - a move applauded by the staff of [-lp-]. The report can be found over here;

Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans listen up: in the next season, Willow goes over to the other side. And we dont mean the vampires and assorted demons who flock to Sunnydale. The girl who two seasons ago couldnt get any boy to play hide the witchs wand will, in the absence of the occasionally overly hirsute Oz, find love and a whole lot of affection in the arms of another woman, another witch even, called Tara.
In other Buffy related news, the first episode of Angel airs in au in a few days... I havn't heard if its good or not.

It really shows how the 'net isn't as controlled/stable as some people would like you to believe, and if it continues may effect e-commerce, net shares and stuff. Who's doing and why is yet to be known however some have speculated that that it's due to the US government's increased interest on net surveillance. Practically every news site has an article on it, here's the one at CNN, and a few more at Wired.

Carmack Interview | - 02.08.2000
archived news - up
The Firingsquad have done great interview with John Carmack, of Quake fame. Unlike most interviews with devopers, this one goes deeper than just discussing subjects which are directly related to gaming, and goes into his past, and thoughts on programming in general. The interview was actually done in person, so the answers are longer than the simple sentance/paragraph answers achieved from email interviews. Quite an interesting read.

Something Awful have quite a funny review of Resident Evil 3 up at the moment where they give it a -30;

Wow, monsters jumping through windows just keeps on getting scarier every fucking time it happens doesn't it? Fans of "survival horror" games like Resident Evil and Pokemon Snap will definitely wet themselves when playing this one, but then again the amount of brain tissue that gets destroyed as a result of playing Resident Evil 3 is enough to make pretty much anyone lose the ability to regulate basic bodily functions.

I finished the demo just now, and although the game isn't great it really is quite a bit of fun. Graphics are nice, not at the Q3/UT standard but they're reasonable and it has some nice scripted events too...

Fun game. I don't see how people can claim it's some semi-realistic game though, it's about as realistic as Half Life. WWN Newsletter | - 02.03.2000
archived news - up
Its been in the works for ages (check the date) and is worth checking. There's allot to read;
- The two articles started on the frontpage (Prepare for Nox and Rebirth of Newsletter) are definately worth reading
- The cheaters article was posted a week or two ago. As was the Superbowl article as far as I'm aware.
- The up and coming page is literally one paragraph containing nothing at all about WWN's future.
- The staff focus on Shdow (thats not me making another typo...) is pretty good, however I'm disapointed to see that no immature "yes please" joke was used at the section of "Sex".

I may as well take the opportunity to clarify why I give Dude a bit of a hard time occasionally. Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of respect for WWN (particulary Shadow and his articles) however it annoys me how such a great site is brought down by one of the major lamers of the community. Here's another example taken from the VT page...

I don't think Ted would like it if I gave everyone his e-mail address, so I will say this. If you need to get a hold of him for a question then please contact me at Dude@wwnation.com and I will be sure to get your question threw to Ted within a week!
I know it's not much, but hell, I have ten or so minutes of downloading to go so I've gotta occupy myself somehow :) Dude is almost the king of the lamers, thinking he is some king shit because he actually knows a Westwood employee's email address. But of course he's to good to give VT's mail address out on that page, not because you can find it all over westwood.com (yeah, VT sure does keep his email a secret) but because he thinks some 13 year old who just got aol (which I presume is the position dude found himself in 3 or so months ago) will actually go "wow, dude is cool, he knows vt's email address"
What a lamer, pls fire him now...

Apart from that it's really good, on the whole following the tradition of WW Nation being one of the best pages out there for editorial content.

"Unfortunately, today's technology won't allow for that to happen" - Of course today's technology doesn't allow us for 20ghz chips, if it did people would be using them today. 8 years ago the technology didn't exist for 1ghz chips...
