Around 11pm last night there was this big crash/bang kinda sound. Like thunder kinda thing. Turns out this guy had wrecked his car at the top of our drive. Hit the neighbours wall, the dividing wall and our wall and totalled all three of them. The car ended up sideways, but the guy managed to get out un hurt. Fire engines and shit were on the scene in a few mins. Pretty cool stuff. We've gotta be careful that we don't drive over whats left of the way or anything coming home now :)

Another wow I noticed was my position in the Seti@home ratings. I thought I had only done about 6-7 units, turns out I've done 12 and U've almost finished my 13th. This machine is eating away at them now, I'm averaging out at about 16hrs per unit. This 100mhz SD is prolly the big difference.

I am posting for two reasons here, first I have only posted uhh once......second I agree with what you are saying warmaker. The project B stuff and the RA2 stuff is getting old in a hurry. To steal a line from the rock..... IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT PROJECT B IS! OK enough of that, I think I will go finish my site review so I can say I have actully done something for LP, I was supposed to have it done like 3 months ago. One last thing can ANYONE fix the forum so that stupid script error doesn't come up, or is that just me?

Project B - who cares? | - 03.29.2000
archived news - up
If you don't like spending your time reading me whining about thing, then this mught be a good post to skip...

Seriosly though, am I the only one who is really getting f'ing sick of reading every joe's opinion on the whole Project B / Red Alert 2 / whatever thing? For the last week it seems that every page has been posting so much repetitive shit, its as if they thinkthat if they talk about it enough it'll just happen.

Project B is not C&C related, westwood have said it as plainly as that. So could someone please explain to me why there so many morons out there who are still talking about how it could be?

The most annoying part of this whole issue is how everyone is just posting the same crap over and over again. redalert2.net? soviet invasion? sword coast? How about you people go over a number of sites past news (even your own in most cases) and see how people were talking about the same domains at least a week ago. The majority of those domains have been around for ages anyway, why is it that things like the tiberian twilight domains are news when they were bought at the same time WW got a stack of TS ones well over a year ago? It's the same deal with that pirate's of skull cove, westwood staff pic. That was circulated a while back, and all of a sudden its news again?

No matter how much people speculate, there's going to be no way to know for certain what project b (or the other projects ww are going to announce at e3) is. So while it may have been fun (and i use that term very loosely) a week or more ago to talk about it, why do we still have to?

From FoO;

I have been learning Russian for over six months, so I was able to spot it. In C&C Red Alert, after the third Soviet mission, a movie is played in which Nadya congratulates you for 'dealing with that spy'. Now, onher desk are three books. The spines of the books all have the samething written on them: "Bret zhopa" (in the respective Cyrillic alphabet of course). In English, this translates to "Brett is an ass." I looked into the instruction manual, and lo and behold, a guy named Brett Sperry is the executive producer of Red Alert!

I bet they'd be surprised to see SOMEONE noticed that.

To a certain extent...

With my half yearly exams for my final year starting in a week, I kinda need to start studying a bit tomorrow and stuff, plus, with end of term assignments and life in general for the next week or two I wont be updating to my usual standard (if there is such a thing?)

I do have a site review, which I'll probably post tomorrow, at which stage I'll also update the playlist. I may or may not post something that I simply did out of my own interest (it has to do with the community) in article form, however chances are it'll probably piss a couple of people off (i'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing), depending on how I present it...

So yeah... i'm sure the rest of the crew will make up for me...

Warmaker promises me that he should change the current music that is up right now to the ones in my Mix. So that's what I'll be doing here...providing you with new music every other week or so and start work on a Skin Section for Winamp :)

Btw...if you haven't checked it out already, WWN released the Interactive Newsletter...Heh...I know, senseless plug ;) But so far people are saying that it's the best that we've done yet, so check it out while Warmaker puts up the new music by clicking here

beda2 has had an interview with Jiminyx0, a clan leader. The interview, which is similar to those that Time did at tumsun has a couple of interesting points, especially if you're into the whole TS clan scene;

beda2: Ok How do you think WW has treaten the fans?
Jiminyx0: Bad they should have fixed the ladder months ago!
beda2: Thats true
beda2: So who is the best player nowdays?
Jiminyx0: Iam one of the best but I think its Mocooow he is great, but I have beaten him
beda2: And who is the best player ever?
Jiminyx0: That is Tsreaper1 for sure his the best ever

tumsun's still down, TheShadow doesn't know why, fgn havn't said that much either... I just miss the staff board.

It's also only a couple of days until April the 1st, which of course means a number of updaters will take the opportunity to post a stack of lame pranks that they took an entire 5 minutes to think up while staring at the upgrading script... beware. Lets hope that someone does think up a good one though, it's always fun watching the newbies go wild in the forums...

Some new content should be up in a couple of days, too.

Weekly Round-Up | - 03.27.2000
archived news - up
It's like I never left, hell i didn't :) So what happened this week? Looky:

The most ground-breaking, controversial and talked about site of recent times in the community is back after a few months of down-time, Tiberian Twilight Revolution. I'm sure you don't need the site history, just give us a visit :) By the time this post is up we'll prolly be past 13k. Also, tumsun continues to be down for what is now 4 days, and still no responce from FGN.

The second Formula 1 meeting this season took place at Sau Paulo, Interlagos. WARNING: If you haven't seen the race, skip this paragraph. Schuey got an excellent start and over took Mika in a few laps. Barichello then overtook Coultard, but his engine blew on about lap 17. Scheuy was storming ahead on a very light fuel load. Mika then had problems and had to retire. Scheuy then managed to get a 40sec lead over 2nd place Coultard. He lapped every one up to about 5th place! It was one awesome race for scheuy.

The oscars start in exactly 1hr and 5mins as of now. I predict The Matrix will totally clean up, as it did at the IGN Antis. If it doesn't I shall gather an army and crush you all ;) Also, I manged to fnid the Mp3's for the new WWF Agression CD. Basically, various artists have taken the wrestlers themes and remixed them. You can get them all here. My favs are Kanes,Undertakers and New Age Outlaws. No change there then :)

Friday nights are cool with me for the nights out. Midnight GMT? 11am au, 8pm for eric and 7pm for oliver. Anyway, goodnight everyone and have a cool week :)

Mailing List - Explanation | - 03.26.2000
archived news - up
When I made my post about it, I really didn't expect to recieve the feedback that I did get (~20 mails and a number of icq msg's) which could probably achieved through CCNNZ, PCNC and FoO's mentioning of the idea (thanks for that.) As I didn't expect that kind of responce, I didn't go into any real depth at all, however as the is interest I dont see why not.

- For starters, Dario reminded me that PCNC actually already have such a list in operation, something that I have to admit I hadn't noticed. Because it'll be really easy for him to setup a couple more lists, and as he offered the list will be hosted by PCNC.

- The main question I got was if it was open to anyone, which it definately is. Of course, lamers, spammers and the like will be removed, and if abuse becomes a problem we'll make it so that admin goes over each user before they have access to the list.

- The would probably be two entirely separate lists. The first will be a straight WW topic one, where off-topic threads are discouraged and the things discussed relate to topics in the WW community, say, 'What do you think about Project B' This list could also be used to alert people of things like articles that you've written on your page, with the intent on starting a discussion on them, rather than advertising. The second list would be a free for all, chatting and the like. Any topic on it (within reason) would be acceptable, and it would just be a place for community members to hang out, and talk about whatever.I'll let you guys know when its actually up and going, and i'll setup a page here which discusses the idea in more depth.

Just a couple of things I found interesting...

Gamespy have an interview with John Hight and Micheal Booth, two of the guys involved with Nox. The questions are a combination of those that would interest someone who knew little about the game, to those that get WW to discuss the game now that it's been released.

I noticed that GameDev.net have an informitive (thats a word thats not used here much) article on 'How to Screw Up a Perfectly Good Game Company in Ten Easy Steps.' As you should hopefully been able to guess by reading its lenghty title, in it the author lists ten different ways that you can screw your company over through making poor decisions relating to the production of a game. While to me it seemed to be composed of what was mainly common sence there was still a few interesting pointers in there.

    IGN Awards | - 03.25.2000
    archived news - up
Nope nothing to do with games, more the Academy Awards. Over at IGN they have the anti-awards. Which s what they thought should get the awards and what the people thought should get the awards. You can check out the whole results here. All us Matrix fans will be pleased to know that it picked up 9 Academy awards and 12 peoples choice awards. I was pleased to see it got 'Film we'll remember in 20 years' by both the people and the academy :)

    Here's on award I didn't agree with:
    Best Villian
Darth Maul (Star Wars: Episode One)
    Agent Smith (The Matrix)
    The Headless Horseman (Sleepy Hollow)
    Tyler Durden (Fight Club)
Dr. Evil (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me)
I reckon Agent Smith was way better than Darth Maul. I mean Ep 1 just sucked. Just to prove it it won 'Biggest Disappointment' hehehehe :)

The title shuld be more than enough...

Issue 5 is probably the best one done by Shadow, Proclone and the gang. While every article is definately worth reading, here is a summary of just a couple...

    - Exploring Possibilities: A great Article by Shadow discussing the trend of some sites looking for interesting, and new thing to do with their site, generally including at least some form of interactivity.

    - Sidelines Opinins: The follow up from an article that Shadow wrote last week, where Shadow asked visitors why they thought that the community seemed to be uniting recently. There's some great theories in there (jackal, you own btw :) which you may, or may not agree with but all are worth thinking about. You might want to skip my comments though, its as great of an illustration, as any, of me trying to sound intelligent at 2 am in the morning...

Proclone's written a great article on the online chats, and the current 'Get to Know' is on Mike May, a WW beta tester.

Shinano pointed this article out to me. To save you some time it's basically about this company called TeraBeam who are offering more bandwidth than Fiber Optic lines (that's about 150m/s =) and cheaper aswell. The cost of one terrabyte of traffic for fiber optic is 80,000 and that was about 2 months ago. Apprently it is cheap due to the way it works, no trenches, roof space etc. Lasers are definately the way forwards.

    WW Chat with Mike | - 03.22.2000
    archived news - up
Like a number of other people, earlier this afternoon I had the pleasure of attending another WW chat, full f lamers and newbies that lead Ted to continually ask why he even bothers with this community. Today's chat was with, Mike who, from the chat seemed to be a really cool guy (maybe it was just his name...) and has worked at WW for 14 years, on something like 15 projects, including one that is yet to be announced.

The chat got of to a pretty good start, and remained interesting throughout with a number of good questions directed towards Mike. However things got a little lame *after* RAJedi's answer on SS was adequately answered by Ted. As RAJedi got his voice removed as per the norm, he must have selected every name on his list and bitched to everyone how, to put it simply, Ted hadn't allowed him to bitch enough in front of everyone. After a quick squelch I nticed how a number of other people followed his trend, replying to everyone (because just replying to to the person you were answering wouldnt be the lame thing to do) that they agree, causing a situation where every second person who was voiced for about 4 turns asked VT why he didnt allow RAJedi to continue his bitching.

As doing this appeared to be the cool thing to do in the newbie/lamer circle they started to pricate everyone telling us hw they were going to do exactly the same thing, a problem I quickly sought to rectify by simply sending the names of anyone who was going to do this to VT, problem solved :)

    Anyway, I figured that Proclone was going to have posted the chat by now (you said you were going to do it right away, you lazy mofo :) I didn't go about editing the chat, so as some form of redemption, here's my part of the chat, following my (private) complementing of mike for his parents good choice in names;

    [Ted]: Warmaker is up next.
    warmaker0
    thx ted
    warmaker0:
    hey mike...
    Private from slipkntgy:
hay wat does that mean that little speaker
    Private from slipkntgy:
    buy your name
    warmaker0:
as vt said earlier, 14 years is quite a bit of time...
    Mike-WS:
    wasssssuuuuppp?
    warmaker0:
i was wondering if you could mentioned some of the toguher programming challenges you've had to deal with in the past
    Mike-WS:
    I know, time if flying!
    Private from RAJediLow:
Everyone, if you happen to go up there please tell ted that I wasn't done talking, and he knows it.
    warmaker0:
and in those 14 or so years, what have been some of the main changes you've seen in the industry?
    Private from RAJediLow:
I brought up a matter that Westwood hates...
    warmaker0:
    (other than its growth)
    Private from RAJediLow:
Not to mention that whoever else brought it up (Pitviper) got cut off too
    Mike-WS:
There's always something - hidden bugs in the COMPILER, AI debugging, etc...
    Private from RAJediLow:
Well, I was going to say that the update was 3 years ago...
    Private from RAJediLow:
and his "new sysop" thing was over 3 months ago
    Private to RAJediLow:
ok... stop being lame now pls
    Mike-WS:
One of our challenges in Blade Runner was to get the entire scene to animate without 3D hardware.
    warmaker0:
    yeah...
    Mike-WS:
Monopoly - the world's first commercial (cd-rom) internet game. That was a new challenge.
    warmaker0:
because it had never been done before?
    Mike-WS:
Programming the EGA card back in the 80's.
    Mike-WS:
Yeah, no one had ever done it before, and we originally did it as an experiment that worked out great.
    Mike-WS:
I just noticed that there were quite a few people in the monopoly channel - very cool!
    warmaker0:
the channel is still busy :)
    warmaker0:
    yeah :)
    Mike-WS:
    For your second question....
    Mike-WS:
Until we got to the PSX2, everything was getting easier and easier to program. Windows and Direct X
    Mike-WS:
saved us a lot of trouble.
    Private from iceman1ch:
hey how come you get to talk?
    Mike-WS:
    I think Microsoft has
    Mike-WS:
really helped us and supported the game companies in a variety of ways.
    Mike-WS:
It's not like we have to write custom video and audio drivers for DOS based games
    warmaker0:
    yeah, totally
    Mike-WS:
Now, we can concentrate on making the game itself with one API (Application Programming Interface)
    warmaker0:
helps the players too i guess
    warmaker0:
no more selecting your sound card....
    Mike-WS:
    You got it.
    [Ted]:
    Thanks Warmaker. Excellent questions!
Sorry bout the private messages, I left a few of them in there, because I figure if I had to put up with them, thend you do too... thankfully, I squlched JediLow right after my witty private to him, otherwise I would have been in for a smack down...

I'd be lying if I said that the chat was the best part of the night, as much fun was had on WOL after Ted and Mike left. I think all parties involved would prefer if the activities are not discussed, however I will say that a visit to the teen flirt channel, and the comments...

Kane41: who heres done the hanky panky with their grandma????
    Kane41: honestly?? come on guys
...were only the beginning of things...

After noticing a discussion on BG:Ren's forum about Skull Cove, I felt the need to hax0r into NSI's whois and retrieve a list of domains owned by WW. There's nothing all that exciting there, the obvious domains for their current games, 3 RA2 related domains, a few domains related to Skull Cove (including PIRATESOFSKULLCOVE.NET, kinda eliminating the idea of skull cove being a add-on to nox) and another couple of domains related to 'net pledge' which direct you to ww's normal page. Sadly, searching on internic stops after you've retrived 50 domains so from this page you cant see all of ww's domains... but i'm sure there's a way to get the search to go around that.

    Weekly round-up | - 03.20.2000
    archived news - up
Yes back once again ( with the trackmaster bang jiggy jiggy ;) after a short break last week. On with this weeks news:

On the community side of things, The CnC top50 list was launched a few days ago by Sonic of CNCNZ, but due to a server crash, all data was lost forcing everyone to sign up again. The principal is the same as the Ts top100, but since most TS sites have diversified into CnC, this is much better. Maybe we should enter the CnCXchange, let ppl know we're here. Kinda be the new TSe or summin :)

In the world of the real, the full effect of the devastating floods are now becoming apprent with hundreds of thousands left homeless and the death toll rising. Aid workers doing there best. Also, the front runners for the Us Presidential elections were decided last week. Also BMW have apologised after the bungle they have made of the Rover del, and it appears that no one knew Alchemy were going to offer to take over the MG models, the sports cars. Damn germans ;) [Just to clarify, Alchemy is a British investment company, BMW is German :)]

In the world of showbiz, the Brits, grammies and soon the oscars wil of passed us by. Santana, band from back in the 70's, totally cleaned up at the grammies. Being nominated in 10 catagories, taking all ten awards. Hes latest song, Smooth with Rob Thomas of Matchbox, is a hit in a few charts in the states and has been getting alot of airplay and airtime [MTv etc] over here.

Finally I leave you with a joke i remembered:I was reading the New Scientist earlier, seems they have created a new gum that secretes a sexual drive hormone, think Viagara, when you chew. Now it's official masticating is the best way to 'get it up'
Good night everyone and have a good week :)

Yep, getting closer to the 7331 mark... Mike, I've editted the counter to display a message, you can go in there and edit it further if you want to change the message or something (so hah! Don't send us any fake screenshots =).

Just thought I'd spice up my post with an image. =)I don't think the 4x AGP Athlon boards are out... but really, there wasn't too great of an improvement from 1x to 2x (there was some, but not a great amount) using a GeForce or something with the older Athlon boards, so not sure how much 4x AGP would help.

We will rule WOL!I'll try to make any WOL raids you guys do, just ICQ me if I'm online (not much =). Or email me, I check my email almost constantly when I'm at home and awake. =)

We could create a room called "TheShadow's Interviewing" and all three of us could be interviewed. Then we can go raid other rooms to try to get people into our Monopoly clan. I feel like getting my butt kicked in StarCraft/Brood War too...

    Baldurs Gate | - 03.19.2000

I went out and bought it today. I wouldn't say that I was this huge RPG fan, infact the only other rpg i've really played before was Fallout 2 which I gotlast year, and really enjoyed. I was really just after something new, since TS I havn't actually played a new game (the only game I've bought since then is opposing force) and out of the games I was thinking of getting (AOE2, Homeworld) it just seemed to appeal to me the most, especially since I've been following BG 2 pretty closely. Being the impulse buyer that I sometimes am, I even got Tales of the Sword Coast as well, my only justification for buying an expansion pack for a game I had never played before being that it was going cheaply.

Anyway, even though it's a year old now, the game is really nice. I spent like two hours doing everything you can in Candlekeep, so I havn't really progressed that far (I'm up to the cross roads in chapter 1) but as far as games go, it seems to be really detailed and all up is shaping up to be a great single player (which I always prefer over multiplayer - 33.6k modem...) experaince. If I don't update for the next few days (weeks?) you know why...

After discovering that Ethermoon Entertainment actually had a page, I've spent the last few minutes going over the game they're currently working on, Strife Shadow. Ethermoon is a developer started by four guys that are fairly well known in the craft community, perhaps most notably Zileas. The page doesnt contain much on the actual gameplay to the game, itdoes cover a bit of the fictional story, and the graphics which look like a mix of aoe2, war2 and kknd (in a good way). Yet, like Starcraft, even from these early stages I think that although the game wont feature the most cutting edge graphics, its in its gameplay that it will shine. Zileas has written alot of stuff about game design in the past, and is really quite knowledgable about games in general, especially RTS something that's really been reinfrced through our discussion on TS. From these early stages I really think that this game has alot of potential, mainly due to Zileas involvment in the project. Scope the screenshots

    Since Game.Ars, Ars have posted a few moore articles that I've found quite interesting. Perhaps the most relevant to this page would be their Nox review, which it seems the reviewer really enjoyed, giving it a 4 1/2 out of 5;
After I fired up Nox it was almost 3 hours before I even looked at the clock again. ‘Gee,’ I thought. ‘I might as well flip through the manual and, like, eat food.’ I kid you not, Nox grabbed me right from the beginning and didn’t let go. It was that simple to get into and that intriguing to play. But I spew forth much goodness and must now make some points to validate said goodness.
Also of interest was their top 10 features of Win2k article. In it they discuss the ten best features that ms have added for win2k from past os'. I just wish somene would write a a key commander program for it, till then i'm staying with 98.

I've known about this game for a couple of weeks now, however after talking to Chili111 about it a couple of days ago I went ahead and signed up to it. For those who havn't heard of it, basically its this text based web game where you're in control of your own planet. Through researching, building, mining and constructing a fleet you're meant to expand your empire by claiming more asteriods from other people's solar systems (how to achive this I havn't quite discovered yet :) After two days of playing I've got a score of ~12000 (I'm leading my galaxy) with a mammoth fleet of 8 fighters (the weakest ship in the game, but the only one i can produce at the moment)

I'm actually finding it quite allot of fun, forming alliances with people (generally with those in the same galaxy, as they can send reinforcment fairly quickly) for common interests and attacking others (or in my case definding, yesterday someone attacked me with 3 fighters which I repeled.) However it does face some problems such as players picking on newer players (someone is attacking Chili111 with about 1300 ships - he has 30) and the number of server problems that the games been facing due to the beta nature of the it and the unexpected popularity that it's recieved.

Even with these problems, it's definately worth a look.

A couple of things that I found interesting, or wanted to comment on...

Recently, in a Q&A with Aaron, RealTS asked about the C&C movie that WW 'were looking into' back in 98 (was it really that long ago...?)

Scyther: In 98' you guys had a press release saying that there was a Command & Conquer movie in the works. Is it going to be made or has the idea been scrapped?
Aaron: Actually we announced that we were looking into the possibility of licensing the franchise to a movie studio. It still might happen, but we're still exploring our options.
Still exploring their options after 2 years? Maybe it's a good thing that it wont be made, personally I cant name one good movie that was created around a game.

This craze that's been surrounding westwood's project B (does it really matter?) has continued to grow as CCNNZ posts an interview with Aaron where he states that Project B has nothing to to with C&C at all. Furthermore, Lone Soldier have discovered that Westwood have registered skullcove.com. Could this be the name of project b? Regardless of if it is or isnt, and no matter how much people speculate we'll still have to wait until E3 to find out.

Yeah of course part of his job is to look after WOL, he is 'in charge' of it. However his job at WW covers allot more than just stopping the lamers on WOL, briging the conclussion that WW need to invest more money into WOL (ie more staff) as VT's really spread out everywhere and simply doesnt have the time to follow everything up. It's not really Ted's fault at all, but the powers at be at westwood for not recognising this issue - I'm sure vt's brought it up in the past...

The chat really scrolled the frontpage of tumsun, thats all... it's understandable with the ftp problems you guys are having tho...

What's with: "on the frontpage(!)" btw? Anywho, isn't Ted the web guy and also doesn't he coordinate WOL? I mean he sorts out sysops etc. Also: you can D/L wol from their site. If you go in their there is a health population of people who just go in there to chat. I still haven't figured how the Monopoly gets 52+ ppl on a regular basis :) But the issue of cheating and 'rivalries' between clans needs to be addressed. There is one way to stop cheating, as in altering units and that is to totally alter the infastructure of the game by not using .ini files, but just hard coding it all and not allowing any flexibility. It would solve a few problems, but create a hell of alot more.

I do have my own lengthy opinions on things like this and other trival things, so I'll be writing an article every so often. TheShadow's take on:...Pop music...Cheating etc. They'll be up when I have the time to write them. I did a few interviews a fortnight or so ago aswell, want me to put a few up? :)

    Chat with Clan Leaders | - 03.14.2000
    archived news - up
    Tumsun's latest recruit, Time has posted a reasonably long chat with two clan leaders on the frontpage(!) of Tumsun. A few interesting bits I spotted;
Time: How do you think WW [westwood] claning has changed from it’s beginning to it’s present state?
KiFLeader: When I first starting being involved in clans, they where all about game-play and spying, now they are about hacking. There is now strategy involved in it.

    Time:
Do you think that WW should have some sort of a filtering system, I mean a way to only allow clans in that pass some sort of standard, that way eliminating all the indecent/inactive clans?
    CabalKDI:
That won't help much, they will find new ways to slip through the system. It’s an endless war at least for now.
    KiFLeader:
No it won’t help, they will hack through it. Westwood should have all the leaders of the hacking clans arrested, at least the ones that have killed or ordered a killing of a computer.
    CabalKDI:
    Yep.
    Time:
Do you think there should be some sort of a regular scheduled meeting that WW would hold for all the clan leaders? In a private chat room that WW controls, concerning clan problems and how to censor out hacking and inactive clans?
    CabalKDI:
Ya, well maybe a meeting place wouldn’t be to bad. Or maybe there could be a head clan, sort of the boss over all the other clans that controls things and reports to WW.
    Time:
Who do you think the boss should be? Someone from WW?
    KiFLeader:
    No, that’s a good question, I really don’t know.
    Time:
    Maybe V-TED?
    CabalKDI:
No, he doesn’t now a f*ck about what is happening out here.
    KiFLeader:
    No, he doesn’t care.
    CabalKDI:
It must be someone who is respected by all clans.
    Time:
So you dont think V-Ted cares about the WW fans?
    KiFLeader:
Not really, I emailed him with a list of people that had tried to hack me and he didn’t do a thing. He got back to me months later and I haven’t heard from him since.

Obviosly, the major problem with WOL is the lack of attention Westwood pay to it, and this is more than expressed in the chat. The problem that Westwood are racing now is exactly the same problem faced by Blizzard with regard to Bnet. The point is, if you're going to offer something like these services then you should make an effort to make them free of the cheaters, regardless of if the service is free or not (and wol isnt really free, you do pay for it when you buy a ww game.) Blizzard did respond to the complaints they recieved, which can be seen through the occasional ladder resets that they do.

Yet WW havn't really done anything about it at all, and I suspect that the issue of cheating is exactly why they are no longer giving prizes to the top player... i mean why award someone who probably got to the top by cheating his way up? Howeverm unlike KiFLeader, I dont think that this is so much to do with VT not caring, but more to do with VT not having the time to deal with it all. Obviosly, Westwood should get someone else to also deal with online stuff, and furthermore nearly every webmaster should stop sending VT questions related to things such as TS gameplay... I mean VT is the web guy, he isnt part of the renegade, or ts team or anything so why do people continually ask him questions about those games?

Other than hiring other staff, WW's other option is to of course setup a gamemaster-esque system for wol, yet this idea of course faces wo majr problems. First, who wants to spend their time going through game logs looking for cheats, and reading emails from nebies about 'cheaters' who won using an engineer rush, or a 'hacked' unit that became invisible as it moved around the map. The other problem is the possibility of missuse, such as banning people that you dont like, or a clan that is beating yours in the ladder. It's a much more complicated topic than most give it credit.

    Console Set back | - 03.13.2000
    archived news - up
If you were wondering where my weekly round-up went, it disappeared. Why? Well the comp decided to just restart as I was typing it up and it was too long to re-type so I just went to bed. Expect it later on today.

Sony were embarrassed to admit a large bug in their 'Groundbreaking' second gen console, the very orginally named Playstation 2. I've no idea what the system specs are actually of the console, but this should shut all the cocky 'consoles-are-better-than pc's' twerps in my class up :) Seems there is a rather large glitch with the memory cards that don't allow the playing of DVD's properly. You can read more here. Seems that sony stocks fell a further 6.4percent (Al's script doesn't allow percent signs) aswell. That's ¥1800 to ¥26000.

Also on the subject of consoles microsoft have made some more noise about their X-Box. They claim it will beat the pants off of the PS2 and other 2nd gen consoles. Hopefully it won't crash every once in a while and make everything only run on X-Boxes ;) You can get the full scoop here.

    archived news - up
    Avault has recently been reporting how a man from South Korea actually died from his gaming addiction. After getting home from work at 4, he would play the game 'One Thousand Years' non-stop for the next 17 hours until he had to go to work again... often not eating and rarely sleeping. After three months of this, he died of heart failure due to stress;
Officers, citing employees of the computer games room Kim owned, said he often played the title from 4:00 p.m., when his shift ended, until 9:00 a.m. the following day, when his next shift would start. He often refused meals and went without adequate sleep in the three months before his death, they said.

Just finished an all nighter playing the new Counterstrike Beta 6 as well as some firestorm. I just beat the Nod missions for firestorm, in a little under a day. What a good use of 50$ huh? It was a pretty good game, one thing that really stood out was the tiberium. They did a phat job making new tiberium with at least 10 new lifeforms/types. There is this one guy, in the last GDI mission, called the core defender. Wow, it took me 21 banshees, 29 artillery, and a shitload of infantry just to kill the guy. But in the end my superiour pimping skillz killed him.

Now back to some more CS. But first Id like to show you all an interview that I had with our very own WM.

The next deal is £30 for total flat rate coverage and I think it includes line rental, thou the article wasn't too clear. You can find all the info here. It seems some BT reps have made comparisons to the American Telephone economy. I don't think we're quite there yet, but things are finally moving forwards. It was pointed out to me how one of the staff members over at Tibtwilight seems to be allowed by the site's webmaster, Tycho to post a direct link to the beta of Win ME (and I realise I'm only further advertising the link with this post, but really, if you were after it you probably would have gotten it already) and further more, allow him to flaunt the fact that he uses pirated software on their frontpage. This isn't meant to be some anti-tibtwilight post, I'm good friends with a number of people at over there but it really is a bit of a dissapoint to see a site of its size allow something like this to happen, especially with the whole firestorm warez thing that's such a big issue in the community at the moment.

I'm well aware that a number of webmasters in the community use pirated software and even though it doesnt please me, it's not a big issue for me, however what ever happened to the ideal that the leaders of a community are the ones who should (publically) set a good example? I hope that it was just an oversight...

The melbourne GP is especially good for me as it's the only time in the year where they show things like the practise and qualifying at all, along with the entire post race interviews and stuff. Of course, along with the actual Formula 1 comes a stack of support events that pretty much take over one of our tv networks for the entire weekend, not that you would hear me complaining. My biggest problem this weekend will be to make sure that I don't drink too much at a party on Saturday night so that I'll be awake for the warm up at 10am.

As of today, Intel will release its 1GHZ pentium 3 cu only 2 days after its rival AMD. Intel's "launch" is only a face saving effort on Intel's part because they skipped all the processors from 800-1000 so if you're not satisfied with your 800 the only option is to make the jump to 1GHZ.

For anyone that actually wants these chips be prepared to dish out part of that money you were saving for college because when they actually is available to consumers it will cost a little over $1,000.00 US which is some weird number in australian money (if kangaroo feet even count). Its a much better idea to buy either an athlon 550 for under 200 and oc it to 700-750 which can easily be done with the proper cooling. This is possible because of the fantastic yields that AMD is getting. The minimum speed they are getting now is 650, they have to underclock chips to reach the 500, 550 mark. With a nice goldfingers card you can not only get a sweet system, you still might be able to afford that real doll.

Chip for chip, according to Anandtech the p3 even with its full speed onboard l2 cache still lost some benchmarks compared to its friend the athlon. If you're interested in reading the reviews, check out the below links.

However when you see a message board post that uses passages such as "I have left it, and it is now starting to become terrible", "The BG:TS staff is also corrupted" and "One word can describe the TS community now: corruption" it just screams out for attention. According to Quigobi the entire community has been 'ruined' by people using warez version of Firestorm, and it has only been further injured by Quigobi leaving it (yet he still posts on message boards?) While I dont disagree with him that using a warez version of Firestorm (or any game for that matter) is the root of all evil I would hardly say that people using it are destroying the community. As toad insightfully replied, the community falling apart has nothing to do with this issue at all, it's been happening for a long time now.

While the Strategic Commander sounds like a cool idea, I'm not quite sure how worthwhile it will be for most gamers to get one, although it obviosly has some benefits to the better players.

    I'm gettin' there... | - 03.08.2000

I estimate that in 106 days, I will be #1 on the [-lp-] Seti@home team. According to my calculations using the following formula:

(Eric's current units done) + ((rate of work time per unit)time) = (Oliver's current units done) + ((rate of work time per unit)time)

    83 + ((1/18.5)t) = 13 + ((1/12.25)t)

    70 = ~.027579t

    t= 2538.2 hours.

So... 2538.2/24 is 105.76 days. 106/30 is about 3.5 months. I predict that definately by July, [-lp-]Oliver will be #1 on the Seti@home team! Woohoooooooo... oh... but what if I turn on my computer for a while... ahh.. maybe by August then...

    Chat Over | - 03.08.2000
    archived news - up
The chat with Eric Gooch, who works as an artist for WW has just ended on WOL. Even tho I missed the start because I totally forgot about it (thanks Shadow) what I did see (minus the lamers) was pretty good, and definately worthwhile. A few interesting points that I noticed...

    - There's been some changes to the Nox server software. Apparently they're "pretty much bullet-proof" now

    - Unlike what the rumors have stated, Project B is actually a game that has never been publically mentioned yet. So it's not Firestorm or Twilight.

    - According to Ted, there's a new layout coming for westwood.com. It's just about in its testing stages, which is good because the current one is really old.

    - There's apparently not going to be a sequal to Sole Survivor, dismissing any rumors of SS 2000

    - For those that were interested, Eric Gooch reckons that Lightwave is probably the best program to get if you want to learn how to make 3d graphics etc.

Proclone or Dude should get an entire log of the chat up at WWN, I'll link when that happens.

heh, that video clip owns, almost as good as the one they did for Josie. I've actually downloaded the clip for it, and after watching it plenty of times it's still funny.

Blink 182 are probably the only punk band that I really like (as apposed to listen to when im with friends) they've got heaps of originality and stlye which makes them great, the all the small things video (how they pay out the boy bands) is just an extension of that.

All the small things is no where near the best song on the CD though (that's imo, it and whats my age again being the most commercial songs on the cd appeal to more people - thats why they've been released,) Mutt (track 10), Anthem (track 12) and Going away to College (track 4) are my personnal favorites...

They scored high enough in each category above (according to our outside web-design firm) to steal the top spot from several other sites including Hecubah.com, noxextreme, noxonline, noxious.net, noxgamer, noxweb, and a few select others.

I decided to do a seperate post for Lamer and Choon OTW.Firstly my choon of the week was a hard decision. I couldn't really deicde between Blink182's 'All the Small Things' or Will Smith's Freankin' It. Probably the first interactive [-lp-] event (to qualify you had to be A) on my contact list B) online :), I did a poll and out of the 13 people i asked, 4 voted for Will Smith and Blink182 got an astonishing 6 votes! Thanks to those who voted, and I think Shinano is annoyed at that reslut :)

Choon of the week goes to: Blink182 with All the small things. If you see there video you'll agree it very funny, the way it takes shots at all the main pop artists :) If i wasn't so tired I'd add it to playlist. Maybe tomorrow huh? :)

What do you think about having some contest or just randomly give shit out cause umm u know I didn't launder all the prizes I got from my sweetypie :)

So here's my incredibly original contest idea:get this, it has to do with a "counter" and I'm pretty sure the way it works is if you are the whatever number I pick on the "counter" you get the goods. So seeing how the obvious 1337 won't work how about 7331? To sum things up heres what you have to do in order to win some amazing sweet prizes:

    • Visit www.warmaker.com if you're not there already.
    • Take note of the "counter" on the lower right sidebar
    • When you see the numbers 7331 then press the "print screen" button on your keyboard
    • Then goto start, programs, accessories, paint and go edit paste
    • Save the file and name it "mikelikesmen" if it is not named that then you won't win
    • Then send the "image" to spymaker84@home.com
If you follow those steps you have my promise (lol) that you'll win. If you do not win please direct all hate mail here.

And finnally, this is for all you Germans out there.

After long hard deliberation and consultation I decided to give the Film of the week award to *drumroll* Lock, stock and two smoking barrells. It's set in the East End of London and is basically about four guys who lost half a million in a game of poker to porn king and hardcore ganster Harry "The 'atchet". Vinny Jones (see hardcore footballer) plays the hitman and Sting plays one of the guys dad. It's classed as a black comedy due to the huge amount of swearing in it. Still a damn good film worth watching and I gladly present it with [-lp-] coverted Film of the week award :)

For those that care over the past month 14357 files were sent to a total of just under 88 megs. 42 pecent of visitors were .com, 23 .net, 9 *.au and 7 percent from the netherlands. 75 percent of files were requested by ie5, 10 percent from ie4 and only 8 percent from netscape 4.

So needless to say our top computer is probably a 400 which is alright. I have no idea what kind of connection it is just that is slower than uhh I don't even know. It takes over a minute to load CNNSI Fantasy Basketball. Yet the teacher who also knows nothing, tells us we need the internet cards(you know get some stupid paper signed by your parents or something about the "laws of the internet"). Also he does nothing but turn the computers on and yelling at kids trying to load p0rn pages. That doesn't happen much but in their minds it still wouldn't be as bad as checking your e-mail! OH NO NOT THAT! Oh well [/rant] I suppose.

The nodes for Telstra are already in my area I presume, and Optus@home's will be ready mid month so I'm just going to go through their acceptable use policies in the next few days and discover who would most suit me, I cant really see there being any real difference in speed (apart from @home limitation to 16kbps upload?)

Look at your frontpage, one is totally irrelevent to TT, another has a totally pointless Q&A, and more importantly two are you using your site to negatively affect a person, something which I thought you wanted to make it look like you were above.

Librarian tech: "What? Are you trying to view movies? You can't do that because our bandwidth doesn't support it."
Me: "Umm... yeah, Flash is super bandwidth intensive, better not get that plug-in. I'll just use those freakin' 486's across the room with the plug-in installed. I guess they can handle the bandwidth better, huh?"

Computer Science teacher: "What's a blue screen?"
Computer Science teacher: "Okay you guys, I don't get this array stuff, you'll have to help me out with it."

Me: "For the website I'm making for you guys, I want to set up a cgi-script so that the teacher will be able to add stuff to the page easier, can I..."
Tech person: "No! You can't do that, the servers probably don't support it."
Me: "They probably do, and I would make sure that the script would be password protected so that only the teacher could..."
Tech person: "Password? No, I can't give you the password, I'm not allowed."
Me: "I'm not asking for a password... this would really make thing easier for everyone..."
Tech person: "Sorry, I don't know what you're talking about... we'll just do it this way..."
    *Sigh* Whatever.

Ok back to the actually point of this last post for tonight, the Lamer of the week award. I was actually at a loss for a while as not much lameness went on. But it came to me through ICQ about 2hrs. Ago it was a message from once winner of this award already. It was Captain Zero! He wanted to tell me about the 'exclusive' interview he had had with Rade. Pitty the two 'exclusive' questions he asked has been answered about 2-3 months ago. I noticed further down this post it basically tells how DeXtr3me double crossed him blah blah blah. It's a pack of lies because I've talked to DeX about this and the TibTwilight staff has not all been fired.

It is with great honour I once again give the award for lamer of the week to Captain Zero. *Riotous Applause*

I'm going to be away 'til thursday as I'm off to a friends for tomorrow night. Cya all soon

    Interesting day painting | - 03.01.2000

After long and hard decisions and arguments over what color the computer was to be, we finally came to an agreement on a nice white-ish color ( kinda creamy thing ). Anywho, I was painting away with the first coat. After 5hrs, several drinks and 5 cd's I was almost finished. As i stepped down the ladder, it became un balanced as the bottom strut on the other side was warped. The ladder then nearly fell over, and the open paint can was on the top. Down it fell and luckily it fell down bototm first, but landed sideways. I managed to stop the whole can getting out and manged to scoop the rest back in. so after this my paint clothes were covered in paint near the sleeves and it took 10mins to get the paint off my hands. Good job it was water soluable heh?
